La anorexia nerviosa es un trastorno de la conducta alimentaria que hace que las personas se obsesionen con la ingesta de alimentos, coman lo menos posible y adelgacen más de lo que se considera saludable para alguien de su edad y peso.

Las personas con anorexia nerviosa tienen un miedo extremo a ganar peso y una visión distorsionada de la forma y el tamaño de su cuerpo. En consecuencia, se esfuerzan por mantener un peso corporal muy bajo a través de la dieta, el ayuno y/o el ejercicio físico excesivo. Las causas de la anorexia no están del todo claras, pero se cree que interviene una combinación de factores psicológicos, genéticos, sociales y familiares.
Muchos niños y adolescentes con anorexia, que se suele desarrollar entre los 11 y los 13 años de edad, tienen una baja autoestima, y su excesiva focalización en el peso puede ser un intento de ganar control en un momento en que sus vidas se sienten más fuera de control.
La anorexia hace que el organismo entre en modo de inanición, lo que puede causar graves problemas de salud que hasta pueden llegar a ser de riesgo vital. Las complicaciones incluyen la bajada de la tensión arterial, el pulso y la frecuencia respiratoria; huesos frágiles y articulaciones hinchadas; electrolitos anormales; problemas cardíacos; y anemia.
El tratamiento se centra en afrontar las conductas alimentarias alteradas y establecer nuevos patrones de pensamiento sobre la relación con la comida. Esto puede implicar la supervisión médica, el asesoramiento nutricional, la terapia y, posiblemente, la hospitalización si la persona afectada está gravemente desnutrida.
Tenga en cuenta
Abordar la anorexia nerviosa puede ser duro y puede requerir tratamiento a largo plazo, pero muchas personas con este trastorno se recuperan por completo. Por lo general, cuanto más pronta sea la intervención (idealmente antes de que se inicie la desnutrición), más breve será el tratamiento necesario.
