La leucemia mieloide aguda es un tipo de cáncer que hace que el organismo fabrique demasiados glóbulos blancos inmaduros anormales (llamados "blastos mieloides").

Normalmente, los glóbulos blancos ayudan a combatir las infecciones y protegen al cuerpo de las enfermedades. En la leucemia, los glóbulos blancos se vuelven cancerosos y se multiplican cuando no deberían hacerlo. Esto hace que haya un exceso de glóbulos blancos anormales, lo que interfiere en la capacidad del cuerpo para funcionar con normalidad.
En la leucemia mieloide aguda (LMA) se fabrican demasiados blastos mieloides. Estas células son anormales y no pueden madurar para convertirse en glóbulos blancos normales. Estas células anormales se acumulan, y también se fabrican menos células sanas, lo que conduce a complicaciones graves.
Los médicos no saben cuál es la causa de la leucemia mieloide aguda. La LMA se llama "aguda" porque tiende a empeorar rápidamente si no se trata. Entre sus síntomas más frecuentes, se incluyen las hemorragias nasales y de las encías, la facilidad en la formación de hematomas, la fatiga, la debilidad, la fiebre y el dolor óseo y articular.
El tratamiento de la LMA consiste en utilizar la quimioterapia para destruir la mayor cantidad posible de células cancerosas y lograr la remisión (estado donde no hay indicios de enfermedad en el cuerpo). La segunda fase (llamada tratamiento posremisión, consolidación o continuación) está diseñada para eliminar cualquier célula leucémica indetectable.
Tenga en cuenta
Gracias a los avances que han tenido lugar en su tratamiento y a los ensayos clínicos, el pronóstico de los niños que padecen esta enfermedad es prometedor. Con tratamiento, la mayoría de ellos se curan.
