Un astrocitoma es un tumor cerebral que se origina a partir de una célula cerebral en forma de estrella conocida como "astrocito".

Los astrocitos son el tipo de célula más frecuente en el sistema nervioso central. Desempeñan muchas funciones importantes, y constituyen el tejido de soporte del cerebro. Cuando hay un defecto en un astrocito que hace que crezca de manera descontrolada, el tumor cerebral que se forma se llama "astrocitoma".
Hay astrocitomas de 4 (cuatro) subtipos principales: astrocitoma pilocítico (grado 1), astrocitoma fibrilar (grado 2), astrocitoma anaplásico (grado 3), y glioblastoma multiforme (grado 4).
Los astrocitomas de bajo grado (grados 1 y 2), que se observan con mayor frecuencia en niños y adultos jóvenes, son altamente curables, porque suelen crecer despacio, no se propagan y suelen ser bastante fáciles de extraer, a menos que se encuentren en áreas donde la cirugía resultaría difícil. Después de operar, existe la posibilidad de que la quimioterapia o la radioterapia no sean necesarias.
Los astrocitomas de alto grado (grados 3 y 4), que se tienden a ver más en adultos, son más agresivos e invaden más profundamente los tejidos. Esto hace que sean más difíciles de tratar. Su tratamiento suele incluir la cirugía, la quimioterapia y la radioterapia.

El tratamiento de los tumores cerebrales está mejorando cada vez más con el paso del tiempo, pero hay mucho que depende de la ubicación del tumor. Los astrocitomas que se pueden extraer quirúrgicamente por completo tienen muchas más probabilidades de curarse, mientras que aquellos que no se pueden extraer por completo son, por lo general, menos curables.
