Hematuria significa que hay sangre en la orina (pis).

La sangre en la orina suele provenir de algún lugar de las vías urinarias, que incluyen a los riñones, la vejiga, los uréteres (estructuras similares a tubos que conectan los riñones con la vejiga) y la uretra (el conducto que transporta la orina desde la vejiga hacia el exterior del cuerpo).
La presencia de sangre puede darle a la orina un color rosado, rojo o similar al té. En otros casos, no es posible ver la sangre a simple vista y solo se la detecta cuando se observa una muestra de orina con un microscopio. (En este caso, recibe el nombre de "hematuria microscópica").
Las causas frecuentes de sangre en la orina incluyen las infecciones en el tracto urinario, las piedras en los riñones (cálculos renales), la irritación de la uretra, las lesiones y el ejercicio físico intenso. Existen causas mucho menos frecuentes y, a veces, aparece sangre en la orina sin que haya ningún problema de base.

La hematuria es una afección frecuente que requiere atención médica. Es posible que, para determinar la causa de la hematuria, el médico pida varias pruebas, incluyendo análisis de orina, análisis de sangre, una ecografía o una tomografía computada, entre otras. Si el médico encuentra un problema lo tratará o enviará a su hijo a un especialista.
