La parálisis cerebral (PC) es un trastorno del cerebro que afecta el tono muscular y las habilidades motrices (la habilidad para coordinar los movimientos corporales).
La parálisis cerebral infantil puede estar causada por lo siguiente:
- infecciones
- problemas de salud maternos (la salud de la madre durante el embarazo)
- mutación genética (cualquier cambio en un gen, la información en las células transmitida por los padres)
- cualquier otra cosa que interfiera con el desarrollo normal del cerebro
Los problemas en el trabajo de parto y el alumbramiento también, a veces, pueden ocasionar una parálisis cerebral.

La parálisis cerebral dificulta el control y la coordinación de los músculos. La parálisis cerebral puede ocasionar falta de equilibrio al estar de pie, dificultad para respirar y ausencia de control de esfínteres (heces y orina).
La parálisis cerebral también puede acarrear otros problemas de salud, entre ellos, problemas de vista, audición, de habla y trastornos del aprendizaje. Los niños con parálisis cerebral grave pueden además tener convulsiones, problemas del habla y de comunicación y, a veces, discapacidad intelectual.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
La parálisis cerebral no empeora con el paso del tiempo. La parálisis cerebral no se puede curar, pero el tratamiento, la terapia, los equipos especiales y (en algunos casos) la cirugía pueden surtir un gran efecto en el desarrollo del niño y en su calidad de vida.
