Alergia al huevo
Los huevos están por todas partes. No solo se sirven en los desayunos, sino que se pueden encontrar en todo tipo de alimentos, desde los panecillos hasta el pastel de carne. Entonces, ¿qué pasa si resulta que eres alérgico al huevo?
Hay algunos bebés y algunos niños que presentan reacciones alérgicas al huevo. Cuando les ocurre esto, deben dejar de comer huevo durante un tiempo. Pero lo bueno es que la mayoría de los niños (aunque no todos) acaban superando esta alergia y, a partir de ese momento, pueden volver a comer huevo sin problemas.
¿Qué es la alergia al huevo?
Cuando una persona tiene una alergia al huevo, su sistema inmunitario, que normalmente combate las infecciones, reacciona de una forma desproporcionada a las proteínas del huevo. Si la persona bebe o come productos alimenticios que contienen huevo, su cuerpo interpreta que esas proteínas son invasores nocivos. Y su sistema inmunitario reacciona esforzándose al máximo para combatir a esos invasores. Esto causa una reacción alérgica.
¿Cuáles son los signos y los síntomas de la alergia al huevo?
Cuando una persona con alergia al huevo come algo que contiene huevo, puede presentar síntomas como los siguientes:
- resuello o respiración sibilante (hacer "pitos" al respirar)
- problemas para respirar
- tos
- ronquera
- opresión de garganta
- dolor abdominal
- vómitos
- diarrea
- ojos hinchados, llorosos y que pican
- urticaria
- ronchas rojas
- inflamación
- sensación de mareo o desmayo
Algunas reacciones al huevo son leves y solo implican una parte del cuerpo, como una urticaria en la piel. Pero incluso cuando alguien haya presentado antes solo una reacción leve al huevo, la próxima reacción alérgica puede ser grave.
Con muy poca frecuencia, la gente puede tener una reacción alérgica muy grave, que puede causar una anafilaxia. En estos casos, se requiere atención médica inmediata, porque la persona puede tener importantes dificultades para respirar y una peligrosa bajada de la tensión arterial.
La anafilaxia se trata con un medicamento llamado epinefrina (o adrenalina), que se administra en forma de inyección. Los niños con alergia grave al huevo deben llevar encima (o bien el adulto que los acompañe) dos autoinyectores de epinefrina por si acaso.
¿Cómo se trata la alergia al huevo?
La mejor manera de tratar la alergia al huevo consiste en evitar comer huevo o cualquier alimento que lo contenga. Los papás tendrán que ayudar a los bebés y los niños pequeños a evitar el huevo en sus dietas. Algunos niños mayores no superan la alergia al huevo con la edad. Por lo tanto, esos niños tendrán que aprender a estar pendientes de qué alimentos contienen huevo para evitarlos.
En lo que respecta a las alergias alimentarias, la clave está en la prevención; por eso, es importante que los niños aprendan:
- a tratar la reacción alérgica en el caso de que la presenten
- a leer y entender el contenido de las etiquetas alimentarias a fin de evitar el huevo y los alimentos que lo contengan.
Tratar la reacción
Los niños con alergia al huevo deben disponer de un plan de acción por si comieran huevo por error. Colabora con tus papás, con tu médico y con la enfermería de tu centro escolar para que puedan poner en funcionamiento ese plan en caso necesario. Este plan puede implicar tener siempre a mano determinados medicamentos, como un antihistamínico o, en los casos graves, un autoinyector de epinefrina. Los autoinyectores vienen en envases pequeños y fáciles de trasportar. Son fáciles de usar. Tu médico te enseñará a usarlos (a ti, o bien a tus papás, si no eres lo bastante mayor).
Es posible que tu médico y tus papás quieran que siempre lleves puesta una pulsera de alerta médica.
¿Qué más debería saber?
Lávate las manos siempre antes de comer. Si no dispones de agua y jabón, puedes usar toallitas desechables para limpiarte las manos. Pero no uses gel o espray antiséptico (o desinfectante) para las manos. Los desinfectantes eliminan los gérmenes, pero no eliminan las proteínas del huevo.
