Un chalación es una protuberancia en la parte interna del párpado. Ocurre cuando se obstruye una de las pequeñas glándulas sebáceas (glándulas de Meibomio) que se encuentra alrededor del párpado.

Las glándulas de Meibomio están ubicadas cerca de las pestañas y son responsables de mantener húmedo al ojo. Cuando alguna de estas glándulas no puede drenar correctamente, se desarrolla un chalación.
Una persona con un chalación puede experimentar sensibilidad, dolor o inflamación en el párpado, lagrimeo en aumento y sensibilidad a la luz. Si un chalación de gran tamaño presiona sobre la córnea, puede causar una complicación llamada astigmatismo (un problema que causa visión borrosa).
Esta afección se suele tratar en el hogar con compresas tibias y masaje suaves que pueden ayudar a drenar la glándula obstruida. Sin embargo, si el chalación continúa aumentando de tamaño, es posible que sea necesario extraerlo quirúrgicamente. Las inyecciones de esteroides también pueden ayudar a aliviar los síntomas.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
Un chalación no es un problema de salud grave. Si no se trata, el área afectada usualmente se cura por completo en un mes. Si pasado este tiempo, la protuberancia continúa aumentando de tamaño o hay pérdida de las pestañas, hable con su médico acerca de implementar un tratamiento adicional.
