La cervicalgia es un dolor de cuello que no se irradia a los hombros o las extremidades superiores.

El término cervicalgia viene de la palabra latina para "cuello" (cervic) y la palabra griega para "dolor" (algos), y la cervicalgia es precisamente esto: un dolor en el cuello. Existen muchas causas diferentes para el dolor de cuello, entre ellas, una distensión muscular, un esfuerzo repetitivo, un pinzamiento de los nervios, un latigazo cervical, artritis, una mochila sobrecargada y malas posturas.
A veces, el dolor de cuello es idiopático, lo que significa que no hay una causa conocida, o sea que una persona puede despertarse con rigidez de cuello. Cervicalgia es un término general para cualquier tipo de dolor localizado en el cuello y que no irradia a otras partes del cuerpo.
La cervicalgia es una afección muy común. Aproximadamente dos tercios de todas las personas padecerán dolor de cuello en algún momento de la vida. La cervicalgia puede desencadenarse y desaparecer rápidamente o bien en un momento dado durar varios meses. El dolor puede empeorar con ciertas actividades o movimientos de la cabeza y en los casos graves puede resultar difícil girar la cabeza.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
En general, la cervicalgia desaparece al cabo de unos pocos días o semanas. La mayoría de los dolores de cuello se pueden tratar eficazmente en el hogar con medidas básicas. Un dolor de cuello que se extiende más de unos pocos meses o recrudece después de una lesión puede requerir atención médica.
