La hidradenitis es una afección crónica de la piel que puede causar bultos dolorosos e hinchados en zonas donde la piel se roza entre sí, como las axilas, la ingle, entre las nalgas o debajo de los senos.

La hidradenitis (comúnmente conocida como hidradenitis supurativa o acné inverso) se desarrolla cuando los folículos pilosos se obstruyen y se irritan. Los médicos desconocen la causa, pero factores como fumar, tener sobrepeso, tener un familiar con hidradenitis y ser mujer aumentan el riesgo de una persona de padecer esta enfermedad. La hidradenitis suele aparecer entre la pubertad y los 40 años de edad, y las mujeres tienen más de 3 veces más probabilidades de desarrollarla que los hombres. La hidradenitis es muy poco frecuente en mujeres que ya han pasado la menopausia o en personas mayores de 55 años de edad.
Los primeros signos de la hidradenitis son uno o varios brotes de unos granos similares a las espinillas o los forúnculos. A medida que la enfermedad avanza, se pueden formar unos bultos dolorosos del tamaño de un guisante en las profundidades de la piel, así como lesiones de color rojo en la piel. Estas lesiones pueden picar y causar quemazón, abrirse y supurar un pus maloliente. Se puede formar tejido cicatricial, que puede dificultar el movimiento de los brazos o la marcha. En algunos casos, se pueden formar túneles que conectan los bultos que se forman bajo la piel. Debido al dolor, el olor, la secreción y la posible desfiguración asociados a esta afección, la hidradenitis también puede derivar en una depresión y otros problemas psicológicos.
La hidradenitis puede parecer que remite, pero luego volver a aparecer. Se trata de una afección que no tiene cura y que muy raramente desaparece por sí sola. El tratamiento suele incluir medicamentos para ayudar a controlar los síntomas y prevenir nuevos brotes. Los casos graves se pueden tratar con cirugía, extrayendo las zonas de piel afectadas, aunque esto no permita impedir que la afección reaparezca o que ocurra en otras partes del cuerpo.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
Aunque la hidradenitis no se puede curar y puede durar años, el tratamiento puede ayudar a reducir los brotes, prevenir nuevos brotes y ayudar a evitar la formación de tejido cicatricial o túneles bajo la piel. Es importante que las personas con hidradenitis busquen tratamiento de inmediato para impedir que esta afección empeore.
