La gastroenteritis es una infección que causa vómitos y diarrea.

La gastroenteritis se puede deber a una infección por virus, bacterias o parásitos. También llamada "gripe estomacal o intestinal", es contagiosa y se trasmite fácilmente en guarderías y escuelas. Suele causar fiebre.
Si hay sangre en las heces (caca), se pueden analizar muestras de heces para detectar bacterias o parásitos Los antibióticos no suelen ser necesarios, salvo en determinados tipos de infecciones en bebés de pocos días o meses de vida y en personas con problemas inmunitarios.
