A to Z: Open Wound, Face

May also be called: Cut

An open wound of the face means a cut or break in the skin on the face. The wound might be minor and near the surface of the skin. Or it can be more serious, affecting deeper tissues of the face, such as cartilage, nerves, blood vessels, or bone.

More to Know

A wound on the face or neck requires medical attention. Doctors may try to close the wound with stitches, tape, or an adhesive glue.

Keep in Mind

Deep, large, and dirty wounds need more care. (A "dirty" wound means a cut that germs have gotten into.) After a child receives medical attention for a face wound, follow instructions carefully to prevent infection and minimize scarring.
