Can I practice using a tampon before I get my period? I want to try it, but I'm nervous and don't know if it's safe.
– Pam
It is safe for a girl to practice inserting a tampon even when it's not during her period. But it's probably better to wait until your period comes. That's because menstrual flow moistens the vagina and helps a tampon slip into place. Without this extra lubrication, it can be harder to insert and position a tampon properly. So it might not feel as comfortable as it would during your period. If you do practice inserting a tampon, don't forget to remove it.
If you're using a tampon for the first time, start by trying the smallest size. You can wear a pad along with the tampon for extra protection until you get an idea of what works for your flow.
