What's the best thing to do if the condom breaks during sex?
Meagan*

Many times, a broken condom won't be noticed until after sex. But if you know that the condom has malfunctioned during sex, stop right away. This is sometimes easier said than done, especially if you and your partner are close to climaxing. Because it can be hard to stop, agree on an exit strategy beforehand in case you need an emergency pull-out.

If the condom does break:

  • If you're concerned about pregnancy, call your doctor or pharmacist right away to see if emergency contraception is available, either by prescription or over the counter.
  • You and your partner should consult a doctor about testing for STDs because people are often unaware that they even have one.

Condom breakage usually can be avoided by taking a few easy steps in condom maintenance:

  • Don't always go for the cheapest brands. Sometimes a few extra dollars at the drugstore can save you a lot of worrying later on.
  • Before using your condoms, check their expiration date and be sure to store them properly (places that get too hot or too cold can compromise the rubber and make a condom break more easily).
  • Also, try not to store condoms in a purse, pocket, or wallet. It's fine to put some in your purse before you head out, but don't leave them there for an extended period of time.
