Can I practice using a tampon before I get my period? I want to try it, but I'm nervous and don't know if it's safe.

You can practice inserting a tampon before getting your period. But it's probably better (and easier) to wait until your period comes. That's because menstrual flow moistens the vagina and helps a tampon slip into place. Without this extra lubrication, it can be harder to insert and position a tampon properly. So it might not feel as comfortable as it would during your period. If you do practice inserting a tampon before your period, don't forget to remove it right away.

If you're using a tampon for the first time, start by trying the smallest size. It can help to use a slender style, with a rounded top. You can wear a pad along with the tampon for extra protection until you get an idea of what works for your flow.

When you have your period, make sure to change your tampon every 4 to 6 hours, and to use the lowest absorbency tampon you need.
